The three occasions, in order of difficulty

The anniversary

Fixed date, known months ahead, and the one where being late is actually noticed. You can book any weekday up to three months out, so the sensible move is to order it the day you think of it. If the date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, take the Friday — a weekend anniversary is spent together anyway, and the flowers are then already in the flat when it starts.

Valentine's Day

14 February, every year, no exceptions — and roughly two years in seven it falls on a weekend (14 February 2027 is a Sunday), in which case the delivery goes to the Friday before. Two things to know: the week before Valentine's is one of the two busiest weeks in the floristry year, and Preznt needs at least three business days, counted without weekends or public holidays. Order a week out and stop thinking about it.

The Wednesday with nothing on it

This is the one that works. On an occasion, flowers are the minimum and get quietly graded against expectation. On an ordinary Wednesday they are proof that someone thought about someone else when nothing at all prompted it. The card can be six words. It is the delivery that says it.

"No reason. I was thinking about you at 11am on a Wednesday. — J"

Home or the office?

Home is the safe answer. A delivery at work is a public event — it is seen, discussed and frequently photographed — and people split hard on whether that is delightful or excruciating. You know which one you live with. If you do send to a workplace, use the full address with the company name and floor, make sure they will actually be in that day, and remember that the bouquet then has to travel home on a train.

Either way it has to be a street address with a person behind the door. PO boxes, Postfächer, Packstationen and caselle postali cannot take flowers.

What to write

255 characters, which is about forty words. The failure mode is writing for an audience: the florist types it, someone reads it out at the door, and the pressure to be quotable produces a card that sounds like an advert. Write the sentence you would say if nobody else were listening.

"Nine years. I would do the whole thing again, including the flat with the boiler and the year we both had that job. Ti amo. — Luca"

"Happy Valentine's Day. You are still the only person I want to sit in silence with. — Dan"

"I know this week has been horrible and I know I have been no help. These are an apology and a promise. Home by seven. — Ellie"

Avoid the card that asks for something back — "hope this makes up for it", "call me". A gift with an invoice attached is not a gift.

The long-distance version
