Not the hospital

Flowers to a maternity ward are a well-meant idea that has quietly stopped working. Many hospitals restrict or ban them outright — infection control, allergies, no space beside the bed — and postnatal stays are now short enough that a delivery frequently arrives after the family has left. Whatever does arrive has to be carried to a car by two people already carrying a baby and a week of bags.

The home address, a few days after they are back, has none of those problems. It is also where the flowers will actually be looked at.

Why week two or three

The first week is crowded: parents, siblings, neighbours, a freezer filling with food, a phone that will not stop. Then it empties. One parent's leave ends, the visitors run out of weekends, the group chat moves on — and the actual work begins, in a house nobody is coming to any more.

A delivery in that stretch is worth several in the first week. Nothing else arrives; there is nothing to compete with; and it says the specific thing that new parents most need to hear, which is that somebody is still thinking about them now that it is no longer news.

Address it to the parents

Name both of them on the card. The baby has an entire town's attention and cannot read. The person who gave birth is often asked about the baby and never about themselves. And the second parent — the father, the non-birth mother, the adoptive parent — is very frequently addressed as an afterthought or not at all, which is felt more than it is ever mentioned.

The same delivery is right for an adoption, a fostering placement, and a second or third baby. Third babies get almost nothing, which is odd, given the household is at its most overwhelmed.

What to write

The card takes up to 255 characters. Three that work:

"Congratulations, both of you. Priya, you are a hero. I am dropping food on Thursday — you do not have to be dressed or talk to me. — Fran"

"Welcome to the world, Elias, and well done to your parents, who I hear did most of the work. Sleep when you can. — The Bakers"

"Three weeks in: the bit nobody sends flowers for. Thinking of you both. Call at any hour, including the stupid ones. — Marco"

One thing to skip: advice. Every new parent is receiving all of it, from everyone, at all times. An offer of something concrete — a specific day, a specific task — is worth ten pieces of it.

Practical notes for the delivery

• Use the full address — flat number, floor, buzzer name. A household with a newborn should not have to chase a courier down the street.
• Pick a weekday at least three business days out. Weekends and public holidays in the delivery country don't count towards those three, and there is no Saturday or Sunday delivery.
• Somewhere in the first month is fine, and it does not have to be precise. Anywhere in week two or three is better than exactly the right day in week one.
