When should you send thank-you flowers?

A few days afterwards, not the same day. Same-day flowers get absorbed into the event itself; flowers on the Wednesday after arrive when the person has gone back to their own week and had time to notice they went to some trouble for you.

Are flowers a good thank-you gift for a host?

Yes, and they are better sent after the stay than brought to it. A bouquet handed over at the door becomes a job for the host — find a vase, cut the stems, do it now, with guests arriving. The same bouquet three days later is purely a pleasure.

The thank-you that gets remembered is not the one you say at the door. It is the one that turns up three days later, when the person has gone back to their own week and assumed the whole thing was forgotten.

Late beats immediate

A thank-you delivered on the day is part of the event. It gets thanked for in turn, absorbed into the noise, and forgotten by the weekend. A thank-you that arrives on the Wednesday afterwards lands in a completely empty context, and the person has by then stopped expecting anything at all — which is precisely what makes it register.

It also solves the host's-gift problem. Flowers handed over at the door are a task: find a vase, trim the stems, do it now, with the oven on and eight people arriving. Flowers on the Thursday after are only a pleasure.

Sending to a workplace

Two things to check before you send to an office. First, whether they will be there — a bouquet that spends a long weekend at an empty reception desk is a waste. Second, and more importantly, the receiving side's gift policy: plenty of companies, and almost all public sector bodies, cap or forbid gifts from suppliers and clients. If you do send, address the card to the person and use the company name, floor and street address. There is no PO box delivery — flowers need a door and a human behind it.

Timing and dates

Three business days is the minimum notice, weekends and the delivery country's public holidays don't count towards them, and delivery is Monday to Friday. In practice: the favour happened at the weekend, you order on the Monday, and it arrives Thursday — which is exactly the delay you want anyway.
