The date, per country

Five delivery countries, two dates, and one thing in common — they are all Sundays.

• United Kingdom — Mothering Sunday, in March. It is the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday, so it moves every year and is usually somewhere between early March and early April. Check it for the current year; do not assume it is the same weekend as last year.
• USA, Germany, Switzerland, Italy — the second Sunday in May. The same date in all four, which makes a family spread across them unusually easy to handle in one go. (In Germany, in the rare year it collides with Pentecost, Muttertag moves a week earlier.)

Because all of them are Sundays and Preznt delivers Monday to Friday, the delivery date you want is the Friday before. Order by the Tuesday of that week at the very latest — three business days is the floor, and that week is the busiest of the florist's year.

Her birthday is the better occasion anyway

Mother's Day is a day when everybody's mother gets flowers. Her birthday is a day when yours does. If you are choosing one to do properly, choose the birthday — and if you can manage the unprompted Tuesday in October with no occasion attached at all, that is the one that gets described to her friends.

What to write

The card holds 255 characters. The trick is not to write something moving; it is to be specific. She knows you are grateful in general. She does not know which particular thing you remember.

"Happy Mother's Day, Mum. Thank you for the four years of packed lunches with the crusts cut off, which I never once mentioned at the time. I noticed. Love, Sam"

"For the woman who drove 300 km to sit in a hospital corridor and pretend she was passing anyway. Thank you. Love always, Nadia"

"No occasion. I just remembered you singing in the car on the way to Cornwall and wanted you to have something nice today. Love, Ben"

If your relationship with your mother is complicated, keep it short and true rather than warm and false — "Thinking of you today. — Chris" is a complete card, and she will read the rest into it herself.

Sending to her from another country

This is the most common version of the whole thing: you moved, she did not. No customs form, no parcel that arrives crushed in nine days.

Two practical notes for a delivery you cannot supervise: give the full address including the flat or floor, and pick a weekday you are fairly sure she is home. Flowers need a doorstep — a PO box, a Postfach or a Packstation cannot be used.

Have your agent handle the date

Mother's Day moves in the UK and the reminder never fires early enough.
